BMW EGR Valve

The EGR valve is an important component in your BMW’s emissions control system. Its purpose is to recirculate a portion of the exhaust gases back into the engine cylinders, where they are burned again. This helps to reduce the overall emissions released by the vehicle.

The EGR valve is controlled by an electric solenoid. When the engine is running, the solenoid activates the EGR valve, allowing the exhaust gases to flow into the intake manifold. Depending on the driving conditions and the load on the engine, the ECU will adjust how much exhaust gas is recirculated. The EGR system is an important part of your BMW’s emission control system and helps to keep your vehicle running cleanly and efficiently.

What causes an EGR valve malfunction?

The EGR valve is a key component of the exhaust gas recirculation system in your BMW. This system helps to reduce emissions by recirculating some of the exhaust gases back into the engine. However, if the EGR valve is not working properly, it can cause a number of problems.

Check out the list below if you suspect your EGR valve is not functioning properly, and see how it can affect your BMW:

  • Clogged valve: The EGR valve can become clogged with soot, which can reduce its effectiveness and cause engine performance problems. For one, it can cause the engine to run rougher, as the mixture of air and fuel will be less efficient. Additionally, a clogged EGR valve can cause the engine to overheat, as the heat from the exhaust gases will build up in the cylinders. In extreme cases, this can lead to engine damage. As such, it is important to have a clogged EGR valve fixed as soon as possible.
  • Stuck Open: The EGR valve can stick open, which can allow too much exhaust gas into the engine and cause the engine to run lean. In addition, the EGR system will not be able to properly control emissions. As a result, your BMW will likely fail an emissions test. In some cases, a stuck EGR valve can also trigger a check engine light. If you suspect that your EGR valve is stuck, it’s important to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic.
  • Stuck Closed: The EGR valve can stick closed, which can restrict airflow and cause the engine to run rich. When the valve is stuck closed, gases are not able to be properly circulated. This can lead to an increase in engine temperature, as well as a build-up of emissions in the exhaust system. In some cases, it can also cause the engine to run rough or stall. If you suspect that your EGR valve is stuck in the closed position, call us
  • Valve Leak: The EGR valve can leak, which can allow unburned fuel to enter the exhaust stream and create pollution. If the EGR valve is leaking, it will not be able to close properly, resulting in exhaust gases entering the intake manifold even when the engine is cold. This can cause a number of problems, including decreased fuel efficiency and increased emissions. In some cases, a leaking EGR valve can also cause engine stalling or misfiring.

If you suspect that your EGR valve is not functioning properly, it is important to have it checked by our certified BMW master mechanics as soon as possible. Failure to do so could lead to further engine damage and expensive repairs.
